Marc DeAngelo, author of Wesley and the River Run

Marc DeAngelo is a man of many talents: a clinical social worker, an educator, an artist, and a published author. As the founder of Raft Books, he creates stories that blend therapeutic insight with heartfelt, character-driven narratives. His work is unified by a single mission: to offer messages of resilience, hope, and self-discovery.

What sets Marc apart as an author is the deep well of personal experience from which he draws. As a learner with dyslexia, he developed a profound empathy for those who must navigate and adapt within traditional educational environments. This perspective is the heartbeat of his writing.

His debut novel, Wesley and the River Run, is a young adult story that follows an eleven-year-old boy and his friends as they participate in their town’s annual summer river challenge. Written by a school social worker who understands the landscape of childhood struggles, the story gently introduces young readers to principles of mindfulness, resiliency, self-advocacy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). It is a story that encourages readers to set goals, take risks, and trust in their own gifts.

The book has garnered praise from experts like renowned psychotherapist Sheri Van Dijk, who says: “Marc has written a lovely book that puts skills into real-life for young people. Easy to relate to and understand, Wesley’s story is encouraging and validating of emotional difficulties that many young people encounter.”

The Wesley series is expanding, with a prequel, Wesley and the Fifth Grade, on the horizon, along with his new project, The Cellphone Monument, coming in 2026.

A Lifelong Advocate for Youth

Marc holds both master’s and bachelor’s degrees in social work and has dedicated over twenty-five years to supporting students in Prince William County Schools. Currently serving as a high school social worker at Forest Park High School, he is known for his compassionate approach, tireless advocacy, and innovative initiatives aimed at supporting the most vulnerable students. In 2024, his dedication was recognized with the Champion of Children Award, a testament to the lasting impact he has had on his community.

His professional work extends beyond the school walls; Marc frequently shares his experiences with fellow teachers and parents, offering guidance on how to connect with children and help them achieve their true potential.

The Musician Behind the Writer

In addition to his work in social work and literature, Marc is a seasoned studio recording artist with a twenty-plus year career in live performance. He has performed and recorded with several bands, including Summer RainLucky 282SquareOne, and Crossfire. This musical background adds another layer of texture to his storytelling. The audiobook version of Wesley and the River Run, narrated by DC musician Michael Leverone, even features original music from Marc’s band, Summer Rain.
