Northern Virginia is home to a haven for fiction lovers – 2nd and Charles. On Saturday, this beloved secondhand bookstore and nore played host to a special event that left attendees inspired, uplifted, and deeply touched by the power of storytelling. At the center of it all was author Marc DeAngelo, whose young adult short story, “Wesley and the River Run,” has been capturing hearts since its release.
“Wesley and the River Run” is a poignant tale that follows the journey of its titular character, Wesley, as he navigates the challenges of a river race where not all participants are equipped with boats. Instead of being deterred by his lack of resources, Wesley finds resilience and support from unexpected sources, ultimately triumphing with the help of a compassionate river coach.
Marc DeAngelo’s connection with his readers runs deep, as evidenced by his recent appearances at 2nd and Charles locations in Woodbridge, VA. However, it was a surprise event on February 16th at the Chantilly, VA location that truly highlighted the magic of community and inspiration behind his work.
What made this event truly special was the presence of guests who served as the real-life inspirations behind some of the book’s most memorable characters. Among them was Nancy Morrison, Marc’s own compassionate high school teacher whose kindness and ingenuity mirrors that of the river coah character in the story. Also present was Lelani Tizon, a former student of DeAngelo’s whose spirit and friendship inspired the creation of Wesley’s loyal companion, Lani.
As Marc DeAngelo and his esteemed guests gathered to sign copies of “Wesley and the River Run,” there was an undeniable sense of camaraderie and warmth in the air. Signed copies of “Wesley and the River Run” are still available for purchase at 2nd and Charles in Chantilly. These copies serve as tangible reminders of the magic that unfolds when we come together to celebrate the power of inclusivity, empathy, and the unwavering human spirit. As well, 2nd and Charles has announced that future appearances with Mr. Deangelo will be coming soon.
In a world fraught with challenges, Marc DeAngelo’s book signing event at 2nd and Charles stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder that, with a little kindness and understanding, we can all triumph against the odds, just like Wesley in his remarkable race.
